Inspirations & Aspirations

For many years I’ve been inspired by the works of female food and travel journalists like Melissa Leong and Joanna Lumely, Samin Nosrat and Annabel Crabb – and I’ve also been incited to write my own works of fiction by a host of female writers in the literary field, including Maggie O’Farell (Hamnet and The Marriage Portrait), Sally Rooney (Normal People and Conversations with Friends), and Taylor Jenkins Reid (whose works need no introduction).

Like Annabel Crabb, I dream of one day working for the ABC, and producing food and culture-related content which both informs and entertains its audience. Like Samin Nosrat, I would love to write a regular food column for a respected media organisation like the New York Times, Variety Magazine or The Guardian. I hope to one day have a resume as rich and diverse as Melissa Leong’s: I want to edit cookbooks, appear on podcasts, write freelance food articles, gain a devoted Instagram following, and break into the world of radio broadcasting or TV presenting. I want to travel to as many corners of the world in my career as Joanna Lumely: whether that be accompanied by a camera crew and a team of makeup artists, or just my own iPhone and battered suitcase.

In the hopes of one day gaining such opportunities, I’m in the process of developing my marketing skills. I’m about to commence a Google Certificate in The Fundamentals of Digital Marketing, and launch an Instagram account aimed at delivering university study, food, and travel-related content to an audience based on the Sunshine Coast, Hobart, and around the world.

I also have a novel in the works. It’s a contemporary, genderbent retelling of Hamlet which is set on the Gold Coast, and I hope to get it published before I graduate in 2025. The novel, which is set in a luxury hotel, is informed by my love of literature and hospitality in equal measure, and I hope it is the first of many that I publish. Follow my upcoming instagram page @eatstudywrite for updates on its progress.
